The sugar conspiracy

John Yudkin and Robert Lustig, the men who tried to warn us

In 1972, a British scientist sounded the alarm that sugar – and not fat – was the greatest danger to our health. But his findings were ridiculed and his reputation ruined. How did the world’s top nutrition scientists get it so wrong for so long?

New Update to Dietary Guidelines

The latest updates to our official Dietary Guidelines recently released by the Obama administration has some good information, particularly regarding sugar intake.  As we’ve said repeatedly, sugar is a HUGE problem.  Obesity, diabetes, cancer, inflammation, these are just a few of the problems caused by sugar.

Better advice would be to eliminate sugar entirely.

Cheerios Hall of Shame

CHEERIOS-shameThe Center for Science in the Public Interest is suing General Mills because of Cheerios Protein.  The sad fact is most consumers don’t read labels, they only scan the front of the box.  This cereal is being marketed as “high protein, a healthful alternative to Cheerios”, and you might be fooled by the big bold lettering on the front. Buyer beware, and always read the labels.  Here are the numbers:

Comparing a 200 calorie serving:

There are 6 grams of protein in regular Cheerios vs. 6.7 grams in Protein Cheerios.

Shame on General Mills!  Shame, not only for such a piddly increase in protein, but for having the gall to charge almost twice as much per serving for Cheerios Protein than original Cheerios.

But that’s not the worst shame.  For that same 200 calorie serving:

There are 2 grams of sugar in regular Cheerios vs. 16 grams of sugar in Protein Cheerios.

SIXTEEN grams!  That’s 17 times as much sugar, more sugar than any other Cheerios!  Not only that, but it contains nine different types of sugar.  Shame!
